Ol Doinyo Lengai: Climb the Mountain of God

A steep overnight ascent of the only active carbonatite volcano on Earth — sacred to the Maasai as the "Mountain of God," and one of East Africa's most demanding day-and-a-half climbs.

Start Your Lengai Trek
Rising sharply from the floor of the Great Rift Valley, Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only active carbonatite volcano in the world — its unusual lava erupts almost black before weathering to white, giving the peak a snow-capped look despite sitting almost on the equator. The Maasai consider it the earthly home of their god Engai, and the mountain still holds deep spiritual significance for communities living in its shadow. The climb is short in distance but steep and loose underfoot, which is why treks depart at midnight: the goal is to reach the crater rim for sunrise, when the temperature is cooler and the views across Lake Natron and the Rift Valley escarpment are at their clearest. It's a serious, physically demanding trek best suited to travelers who want a genuine challenge alongside their safari, often paired with a visit to Lake Natron's flamingo colonies at the mountain's base.
