Mto wa Mbu Cultural Tour

A walking or cycling cultural tour through a multi-tribal farming village near Lake Manyara — markets, irrigation farms, banana beer, and a rare cross-section of Tanzania's ethnic diversity in one town.

Plan Your Mto wa Mbu Day Trip
Mto wa Mbu — Swahili for "River of Mosquitoes" — sits at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment near the entrance to Lake Manyara National Park, and is unusual for a small Tanzanian town in that it's home to people from more than a dozen different tribal groups, drawn originally by the fertile, well-irrigated farmland around it. Cultural tours here typically move on foot or by bicycle through the village's farms and irrigation channels, stopping at local markets, a wood-carving cooperative, and small-scale farms growing banana, rice, and maize. Many tours include a stop to try locally brewed banana beer and a chance to talk with farmers about the traditional irrigation system that's sustained the area for generations. It's a grounded, unhurried way to see everyday Tanzanian life up close, and works well as a half-day cultural add-on before or after a game drive at nearby Lake Manyara or Ngorongoro.
