Chemka Hot Springs: Turquoise Waters Near Kilimanjaro

Natural spring-fed pools of strikingly clear turquoise water, shaded by fig trees near the Kenya-Tanzania border — a popular swimming and relaxation stop between Arusha and Moshi.

Plan Your Chemka Day Trip
Also known locally as the Kikuletwa Hot Springs, Chemka is a natural oasis of startlingly clear, warm turquoise water fed by underground springs, tucked into a grove of large fig trees whose roots trail directly into the pool. The water stays a comfortable temperature year-round and is calm and shallow enough for casual swimming, with a rope swing at one popular access point for the more adventurous. Because it sits roughly midway between Arusha and Moshi, Chemka works well as a relaxed half-day stop — a chance to swim and unwind — either on the way to a Kilimanjaro trek or as a standalone day trip combined with lunch at a nearby lodge. It's one of the few spots in the region where the appeal is simply the water and the setting rather than wildlife or hiking, making it a good change of pace on a longer itinerary.
