Ngorongoro Crater: Where Wildlife Meets an Ancient World

There is something unforgettable about standing above Ngorongoro Crater and seeing an entire world spread out below you. Then you descend into it.

Plan Your Ngorongoro Experience

Descend Into One of Africa’s Great Wildlife Experiences

Inside the crater, open grasslands, wetlands and woodland create a remarkable setting for wildlife. Lions rest in the plains, elephants move through the landscape, buffalo gather in herds, and the endangered black rhinoceros may appear in the distance.

This is more than a game drive. It is the feeling of being surrounded by wildlife in a landscape shaped by millions of years of nature.

Why Ngorongoro?

Ngorongoro brings together what many travellers hope to experience in Tanzania: abundant wildlife, dramatic scenery and the possibility of memorable Big Five encounters.

The crater is relatively compact, allowing you to experience different habitats within a single safari. Every turn can bring something different—from a pride of lions resting in the grass to hippos gathering around the wetlands or flamingos around Lake Magadi.

And between the sightings, there is the landscape itself: vast, quiet and surrounded by ancient volcanic walls.

The Wildlife Experience

Ngorongoro is home to lions, elephants, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, antelopes and many bird species. It is also one of the places where you may encounter the rare black rhinoceros.

Wildlife is never guaranteed, and that is part of the beauty of safari. You follow the landscape, watch animal behaviour and allow nature to reveal itself rather than following a script.

Sometimes the most memorable moment is not the rarest animal, but a quiet encounter you never expected.

More Than Wildlife

The Ngorongoro experience extends beyond the crater floor. The surrounding conservation area is home to Maasai communities, creating opportunities to learn about local traditions, pastoral life and the relationship between people, livestock and the land.

Ngorongoro can also be combined with cultural experiences around Mto wa Mbu, adding another layer to your journey through Northern Tanzania.

Best Time to Visit

Ngorongoro can be visited throughout the year.

June–October: Dry-season conditions and excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing.

November–December: The short rains bring fresh vegetation and a greener landscape.

January–March: An excellent period to combine Ngorongoro with the wider Serengeti ecosystem and the migration calving season.

April–May: The long rains bring fewer visitors and beautifully green scenery.

The best time depends on what you want from your safari—not simply what month is considered “best.”

How Long Should You Stay?

Ngorongoro can fit comfortably into a short Northern Tanzania safari, with a crater game drive often combined with Tarangire, Serengeti or Lake Manyara.

For a more relaxed experience, allow additional time for the surrounding landscapes and cultural experiences.

The goal is not to see Tanzania as quickly as possible. It is to give yourself enough time to actually experience it.

Where You Can Stay

Choose accommodation according to the experience you want:

Budget: Campsites and comfortable budget lodges.

Mid-Range: Comfortable lodges and tented lodges with good facilities.

Luxury: Premium lodges and luxury tented camps with exceptional settings and service.

Camping: A closer-to-nature experience for travellers who enjoy sleeping under the African sky.

Ngorongoro & Serengeti

Pairing Ngorongoro with Serengeti gives you two very different sides of Northern Tanzania.

Ngorongoro offers a concentrated wildlife experience within an ancient volcanic landscape, while Serengeti opens into vast plains where wildlife moves across seemingly endless horizons.

Together, they create one of Tanzania's most rewarding safari journeys.

The Moment You Remember

You may remember the lion.

You may remember the rhino in the distance.

You may remember the first view of the crater from above.

Or perhaps it will be something much smaller—the silence before sunrise, zebras crossing the road, or the feeling of realizing that you are standing somewhere that photographs could never fully explain.

Ngorongoro is not simply somewhere to see wildlife. It is somewhere to feel Tanzania.

Plan Your Ngorongoro Experience

Whether you have a few days or are planning a longer Northern Tanzania journey, Ngorongoro can be shaped around the experience you want—from wildlife and photography to culture, comfort and adventure.

Your Tanzania story does not need to look like everyone else's.
