African Elephants, the largest of the land animals live in a cohesive herd of ten or eleven closely related females and their calves and is led by an older female kown as the matriarch. Male leave the cow herds at puberty, when they are about 12 years old, and spend the rest of their lives alternately associating with other males and wandering alone.
